Iceland submits EU membership bid - 23 July
Iceland has formally applied to join the European Union, a week after the parliament in Reykjavik voted in favour of accession to the 27-nation bloc. - BBC News website

Conference on the rights of citizens in the EU - 23 July
Lawyers, researchers and politicians from all over the EU are meeting in Stockholm over two days to discuss the rights of the individual in connection with crime. "Every citizen of every EU country has rights. The most fundamental rights must be the same in all Member States", said Minister for Justice Beatrice Ask in her opening address. - eGov Monitor website

Bosnia

Bosnian Serbs guilty of burnings - 20 July
Two Bosnian Serb commanders have been found guilty of war crimes, including burning women and children alive, during the Bosnian civil war. Cousins Milan and Sredoje Lukic were members of a paramilitary group called the White Eagles, or the Avengers. They were accused of murder, persecution, extermination and other inhumane acts against Bosnian Muslims near Visegrad between 1992 and 1994. Judges at The Hague jailed Milan Lukic for life, and Sredoje to 30 years. - BBC News website

A Master’s in art crime (no cloak and dagger) - 21 July
Professor Tijhuis, who also practices international art law in Amsterdam, had come to the small walled town of Amelia in Umbria, where church bells chime hymns to the Virgin Mary, and swallows squawk louder than cars, to lecture students enrolled in what is billed as the first master’s program in international art crime studies. His class focused on international organized crime, and the lecture touched on money laundering and cigarette smuggling as well. - New York Times website

Palazzolo denies Mafia links - 24 July
Vito Palazzolo today broke his silence after the courts in Italy rejected his appeal against being convicted of "Mafia association" and the South African government signed papers authorising his extradition. - The Times website
