Tannenbaum Case (Ponzi Scheme)

Tannenbaum says he's no Madoff as South Africans cry fraud - 21 July
"I've never seen anything like this", said Shirish Kalian, a Johannesburg attorney and a court-appointed trustee of Tannenbaum's estate, which has been frozen in South Africa. "There is lots of information coming through. People are coming forward and telling us privately what has been happening". Tannenbaum, 43, says he's no Madoff. "Your attempt to compare me with Madoff isn't only odious, but is blatantly and patently incorrect without any factual foundation and sensationalist", Tannenbaum said in a July 8 e-mail. - Bloomberg website

Investors who may have been defrauded of as much as 2 billion rand ($258 million) by Barry Tannenbaum will ask Australian authorities to investigate his immigration status in a bid to force Tannenbaum to return to South Africa. Tussle expected over spoils from Ponzi scheme  - 23 July
A fight is looming between government law enforcement agencies and investors in the Ponzi-type scheme operated by Barry Tannenbaum over who gets the majority of the spoils from the assets and money recovered by the trustees. Ian Levitt of Ian Levitt Attorneys, who is representing several investors in the scheme, said the task team established by the government was fighting and assisting the trustees to get as much money in the estate to the ultimate benefit and distribution to creditors. - Business Report website

A South African court extended an order freezing the assets of Darryl Leigh, a business associate of Barry Tannenbaum, who is accused of fraud amounting to 2 billion rand ($260 million), by almost four weeks. South Gauteng High Court today agreed to extend the application to freeze Leigh's assets, which include two Lamborghinis, two Mercedes-Benz cars and three properties, until Aug 18. That is the same date that the applications to freeze the South African assets of Tannenbaum and associate Dean Rees will be heard. - Bloomberg website
