Tannenbaum task force finds R2bn - 2 July
South African government investigators have so far discovered R2bn worth of investment in an alleged Ponzi scheme run by Barry Tannenbaum, finance minister Pravin Gordhan said. "Current indications are that the scheme amounts to approximately R2bn", Gordhan told lawmakers in Cape Town yesterday, adding that there have been media reports of losses of between R5bn and R18bn. Tannenbaum has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. - Moneyweb website

S Africa's Tannenbaum says defrauded Barwa-source - 2 July
A South African businessman accused of orchestrating a 15 billion rand ($1.93 billion) fraud has admitted to forging documents to deceive Qatar's Barwa Real Estate, a source close to the matter said on Thursday. The source, who asked not to be named, said Barry Tannenbaum had made the admission in a signed affidavit used by Barwa in a UK court application to freeze the assets of Dean Rees, a South African lawyer who the source said was linked to Tannenbaum. - Reuters website
