'Baron'
in hot water with law once more - 6 July
The name of controversial Brazilian-born self- styled baron Camilo
Agasim-Pereira – who repeatedly made headlines in Port Elizabeth
over legal battles and the controversial way he acquired his title
– unexpectedly popped up in court documents in the city this
week.
According to the documents, Wertheim Becker Inc – one of the
oldest and most well-respected law firms in Johannesburg –
turned to the Port Elizabeth High Court for an order to place
Pereira's estate under sequestration. It is alleged he owes the
law firm more than R90 000 for "professional services"
rendered. Although Pereira left South Africa several years ago,
one of the reasons the case was brought before the Port Elizabeth
High Court was because his last known address was 7 5th Avenue,
Summerstrand. The applicant instituted legal action against
Pereira in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court in January 2004
for R92 059 plus interest and costs for services rendered. The
court ordered Pereira to pay up.
In April 2005, Pereira brought an application to appeal against
the court's decision. This was however denied with costs. By this
time Pereira had left South Africa without paying. The case was
however removed from the roll on Tuesday after the applicant's
counsel asked for the matter to be transferred to the South
Gauteng High Court. - Weekend
