Iran says courts will teach protesters a lesson - 23 June
Iran's top legislative body, the Guardian Council, on Tuesday again ruled out annulment of the election saying there had been no major polling irregularities. State television said more than 450 people were detained during clashes with police in Tehran on Saturday in which at least 10 people were killed. "Those arrested in recent events will be dealt with in a way that will teach them a lesson," the official IRNA news agency quoted senior judiciary official Ebrahim Raisi as saying on state television late on Monday. He said a special court was studying the cases. "The rioters should be dealt with in an exemplary way and the judiciary will do that," Raisi said. - Reuters website

Victim of Arab sex laws loses appeal - 22 June
A South African woman sentenced to three months in a United Arab Emirates jail for sleeping with her married boss lost her appeal for a reduced sentence yesterday. Strict "decency" laws in the UAE stipulate that a man and a woman who are not married to each other may not be alone in a public place or in "‘suspicious circumstances". - The Times website

SA woman held for 'sex crime' - 7 June
A South African woman has been jailed in the United Arab Emirates for sleeping with her married boss - even though medical records show no evidence of sex having taken place. The seven-page hospital report on 22-year-old Roxanne Hillier and her 41-year-old Emirati employer will be central to her case when she appeals against her three-month prison sentence in a week's time. - The Times website
