'Canned Lion' Case

Canned hunting canned? - 12 June
A court decision in favour of government on canned hunting could be the end of the road for South Africa's 123 lion breeders and some 3 000 canned lions, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Friday. This follows a verdict in the High Court in Bloemfontein on Thursday that semi-tame animals may only be hunted 24 months after being set free from their breeding cages. Judge Ian van der Merwe held, in favour of the government, that biodiversity must be protected and that the breeding of lions in captivity with the sole purpose of hunting did not aid their protection - iafrica website

'Canned hunting' of captive lions banned in South Africa - 12 June
The controversial sport of "canned hunting", in which trophy hunter tourists pay to shoot specially-bred captive lions, has been banned in South Africa. The South African government welcomed the move, which followed attempts by lion breeders to block the banning of their trade. "We need a clean hunting industry, free from unacceptable behaviour which could damage the country's image," said Albi Modise, a spokesman for South Africa's forestry department. Until its ban, South Africa was one of the world's canned hunting capitals, with more than 1,000 lions killed every year by foreign hunters. - Telegraph website

Future looks no better for SA's canned lions - 14 June
The government has won the court case that will effectively put a stop to canned lion hunting - but it now faces a massive animal welfare crisis as breeders threaten to ditch unwanted predators that no longer have any commercial value. There are between 3 500 and 4 000 lions in captivity in South Africa, most of which are bred specifically for the hunting industry. The South African Predator Breeders Association (Sapba) estimates that 1 050 lions - the highest figure on record - were hunted in South Africa last year. - IOL website

Judge lauded for ruling on hunting - 15 June
Conservationists applauded Judge Ian van der Merwe's ruling in the Free State High Court, Bloemfontein, on Thursday, in which he upheld laws protecting threatened or protected animals that could put an end to canned hunting in South Africa. The Endangered Wildlife Trust said on Friday that Van der Merwe dismissed with costs the case brought against the state by the Predator Breeders' Association. "We welcome this judgment and believe that the principles of ethical, humane treatment of all species should never be compromised for the economic enrichment of a few, as has been the case with canned hunting in South Africa", said the trust's chief executive, Yolan Friedmann. - The Times website
