'Bogus
attorney' leaves woman in debt - 22 June
An accountant landed in worse debt after taking her financial woes
to an alleged bogus attorney, the Bellville Specialised Commercial
Crime Court heard today. Accountant Linda Adams, of Fish Hoek,
testified in the trial of Hugh Pollard, who has pleaded not guilty
to multiple theft charges and violations of the Attorneys’ Act.
She had approached him after he had advertised legal assistance in
financial issues. Pollard told her he attended to legal matters
pertaining to financial services. Asked if she in fact had wanted
Pollard to argue for her in court proceedings, she replied :
"No. Negotiations on my behalf, with my creditors, was my
first line of defence. My intention was never to defend the civil
acclaims against me, but to negotiate settlements". - The
