Zuma confirms possible bail-outs for distressed SA firms - 3 June
The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has developed a programme to fund South African companies in distress as a result of the global economic crisis, President Jacob Zuma confirmed in his inaugural State of the Nation address on Wednesday. Speaking during a joint sitting of South Africa's Cape Town-based Parliament, Zuma indicated that these potential bail-outs were in line with the framework for South Africa's response to the international economic crisis, concluded by government, labour and business in February. -

IDC will only consider bailing out 'viable' firms in distress - 3 June
The emphasis given by President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation address to distressed "companies" rather than "sectors" was an important clarification, IDC chief economist Lumkile Mondi said on Wednesday. Speaking to Engineering News Online following Zuma's address to a joint sitting of Parliament in Cape Town, Mondi stressed that the clarification once again showed that neither the IDC nor the government had any intention of pursuing "blanket" support programmes across troubled sectors. -
