Public Service Broadcast Bill

Campaign to get more time for broadcast bill - 2 December
Media Monitoring Africa, a media policy watchdog, yesterday launched a campaign on its website calling for the public to petition the director- general of the Department of Communications, Mamodupi Mohlala, to allow more time to comment on the controversial Public Service Broadcast Bill, which it says will fundamentally change broadcasting. As the deadline for comment looms - next Monday - the department said it would consider a request for an extension only after the deadline had passed. - Business Day website

Second Hand Books Act

Act riles second-hand book dealers - 2 December
Second-hand book dealers are protesting that the speaker of the National Assembly, Max Sisulu, has turned a deaf ear to their complaint that incorrect procedures followed by the portfolio committee on safety and security resulted in second-hand books being erroneously included in the Second-Hand Goods Act. The 1955 act was amended this year in order to prevent the sale of stolen goods and will now force book dealers to record the purchase and sale of every book they handle, which could force them out of business. The chairman of the South African Book Dealers Association (Sabda), Ian Balchin, said including books in this act was a gross error brought about by “political chicanery” rather than consideration of the facts. - Business Day website
