University race quotas row in Brazil -1 November
There are more people of African descent in Brazil than in any country outside the African continent itself, but the higher you go in Brazilian society the less evidence there appears to be of that reality. Critics say part of the blame lies with a system which has often failed to provide equality of access to third-level education, though recent years have seen some improvements. To try to address the problem, many Brazilian universities have adopted affirmative action policies or quotas to try to boost the number of black and mixed race students, or more generally those from poor backgrounds. - BBC News website

Lawsuits won't harm SA - 1 November
Victims have right to legal action against 'apartheid companies', writes Howard Varney. The government took a welcome step by withdrawing its opposition to class-action lawsuits against multinational corporations by the Khulumani Support Group and former TRC commissioner Dumisa Ntsebeza. If it is truly to stand up for victims of apartheid-era crimes, however, much remains to be done. - Times Live website

Madoff accountant pleads guilty - 4 November
The accountant accused of helping Bernard Madoff steal billions of dollars in Wall Street's biggest Ponzi scheme pleaded guilty to fraud and tax charges Tuesday and is co-operating with investigators, court papers showed. David Friehling agreed to cooperate with the government and entered a guilty plea in federal court in Manhattan. Friehling, 49, faces 114 years in prison for nine counts including fraud and obstructing tax authorities, the plea agreement stated. - Business Report website
