Court backlog 'is prejudicing litigants' - 8 October
Thousands of litigants are being prejudiced by the Cape High Court's backlog of civil cases, say lawyers who are concerned that their clients will have to wait several years to have their day in court. There are 3 018 civil matters which have not yet been allocated trial dates - and the next available date is in 2012. Matters received up until August last year have been allocated trial dates. - IOL website

Van der Westhuizen sentenced - 22 October
Former senior police officer Marius van der Westhuizen was on Thursday effectively jailed for 24 years for the murder of his three children three years ago. Cape High Court Judge Willem Louw ruled the triple murders were not planned or premeditated. He said a sentence of 15 years on each count would have been imposed had the seriousness of the murders been the only factors to be taken into account. There were however substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a less severe sentence. - IOL website
