Parow
Judge
threatens to close murdered child case - 7 October
A Parow Regional Court magistrate warned the mother of murdered
two-year-old Randoline Fortune and other State witnesses that
they could derail the State's case against the man accused of
her rape and murder if they did not co-operate with the State. The
case was postponed in July to this week to give the witnesses,
including the baby's mother Dionick, grandparents, aunt and her
mother's new boyfriend, the opportunity to go for
state-sponsored counselling to prepare them for testifying
against Peterson. But none of the witnesses met their
scheduled appointments with counsellors, nor did they arrived
for consultations with State advocate Lorraine van Wyk. - IOL

Pietermaritzburg
Ex
KZN magistrate sentenced - 21 September
A former KwaZulu-Natal magistrate was sentenced in the
Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Monday to 12 years
imprisonment for fraud amounting to R100 000. Johan Caren Fouche
will only serve seven of the 12 years as five were conditionally
suspended. The 40-year-old father of one committed the fraud and
theft crimes to subsidise his gambling addiction, said
magistrate Chris van Vuuren on sentencing Fouche. - IOL

McBride
denied right to prepare for trial, court told - 19 October
The state has deliberately denied former Ekurhuleni metro police
chief Robert McBride the right to prepare for his
drunken-driving trial, the Pretoria Regional Court heard on
Monday. Advocate Guido Penzhorn, SC, acting for McBride, said
the state had withheld documents, including statements from
witnesses, relating to the case that were crucial for the
defence to prepare for trial. - Mail
