billboard fury - 18 October
Local companies face big losses as Fifa and municipalities ban ads
competing with sponsors' products. A war is brewing between soccer's world
governing body, Fifa, and two of South Africa's outdoor marketing giants
over lucrative advertising billboards alongside major routes to 2010
stadiums. In terms of bylaws gazetted by all the World Cup host cities,
companies that are not official sponsors of the Fifa 2010 World Cup may
not advertise on billboards on ''protocol routes'' brands that are
competitive to those of sponsors from 15 days before the tournament until
five days after it ends. - Times

The Minister of Safety and Security is set to ask the Pretoria High Court
for leave to appeal against the court earlier awarding over R2-million in
damages to the widow of Eric Gugger, who was gunned down in front of his
Pierre van Ryneveld home by a policeman who mistook him for a criminal
five years ago. The court in September this year ruled that the minister
had to pay R2,2m to Rosemary Gugger for the loss of support and income

'Advocate Barbie' Case
Advocate
Barbie knew what she was doing - 7 October
The Pretoria High Court today rejected claims by former advocate Cezanne
Visser that she had no will of her own when involved in sexual acts with
young girls and three women. "The court finds that the accused now
for convenience sake wants to hide behind Dirk Prinsloo's conduct to
justify her own conduct and deeds", Acting Judge Chris Eksteen said
in his judgment. - Sowetan website
Advocate
Visser breaks down - 8 October
Cezanne Visser and her family later stood close together outside and spoke
quietly before returning to court to hear whether her bail would be
extended until sentencing procedures on December 8. Visser, known as
"Barbie", sat quietly as she listened to the judgment. Judge
Eksteen did not mince his words about her conduct. He cited at length all
the improbabilities in her version of events. He ultimately rejected her
defence that she was totally under the spell of her former lover, Dirk
Prinsloo. It is understood that Visser's legal team has instructions to,
after her sentencing, apply for leave to appeal against her conviction. - IOL website

Visser's conviction welcomed - 7 October

Pieters worked for the couple in 2002 and was one of the state's main
witnesses. She also told the court she often advised Visser to leave
him and offered her a place to stay. "I am very pleased with the
judgment ; I think it was a very fair judgment. I think she got exactly
the judgment she deserved", says Pieters. - Eye
