Traditional leader sorry for violent circumcision - 7 October
A traditional leader from the Eastern Cape has apologised to 21-year-old Bonani Yamani, who was violently circumcised two years ago. In a drastic about turn, the chairperson of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa in the province, Nkosi Ngubo Mgcotyelwa, apologised for previous remarks by the congress that men who refuse traditional circumcision should be ostracised. He also called for an end to forced circumcision. In a settlement document filed at the Bhisho Equality Court on Monday, Mgcotyelwa said Contralesa accepted that "the Constitution of South Africa gives the right to each adult male individual to choose whether or not he should attend traditional circumcision school according to his religious beliefs". - Times Live website

Blind woman seeks justice on home - 14 October
A blind Pietermaritzburg woman has turned to the Equality Court in a bid to force the Msundusi Municipality to make her home suitable to her needs. In an affidavit filed in the city's Equality Court on Monday, Linda van Wyk detailed the difficulties of living in her RDP house in Eastwood, which was not adapted to the needs of a blind person. Without steps with railings, a ramp, levelled yard and driveway access for her transport to the Blind and Deaf Society of SA, Van Wyk has been "struggling to live". Her house is set on a hill and, without the ramp and railings, she cannot find her front door. - Times Live website
