Chikane defends Scorpions - 5 May
The existence of the Scorpions is "as valid today as it was at
conception", says the Khampepe report released on Monday. "Despite
indications that crime levels are dropping, it is my considered view
that organised crime still presents a threat that needs to be
addressed through an effective comprehensive strategy," stated the

Mbeki to face
storm over Scorpions' fate - 5 May
President Thabo Mbeki is likely to face sharp criticism this week over
the dissolution of the Scorpions when he finally releases the Khampepe
report on the unit today. The report, which Mbeki has kept under wraps
for more than two years, is being released just five days after the
cabinet approved the National
Prosecuting Amendment and General Law Amendment bills,
legislation that could eventually allow the Scorpions to be disbanded.

Scorpions : State's massive contradictions

A day before Cabinet approved legislation that will shut down the
Scorpions, the director general of justice and two Cabinet ministers
stated under oath that "no decision has been
taken by Cabinet to dissolve the DSO [Directorate of Special
Operations]". On Tuesday justice Director
General Menzi Simelane filed government's
answering affidavit in response to a court application by
businessperson Bob Glenister to stop the Scorpions from being
incorporated into the South African Police Service. -

Findings may overshadow Scorpions' bill - 29 April
The controversial bill that would signal the death knell of the
Scorpions is expected to be approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday and
tabled in Parliament ahead of MPs returning from their constituency
break next week. It is to be accompanied on Monday by the long-awaited
release of the full Khampepe Commission report, kept under wraps by
the Presidency since February 2006. -
