A Grassy Park man faces a life sentence for subjecting the mother of his child to a three-day kidnapping ordeal of assault, rape and sodomy. Scorpions quizzed on underwear probe
Why did the Scorpions rummage through the underwear of Bijou Francoise Moynot, wife of Pierre Jean Marie Robert Moynot, the managing director of Thint (Pty) Limited, the local arm of the giant French arms and electronics dealer? This is precisely the question that Madame Moynot, as well as her husband and Thint the company, have asked in an application filed in the Pretoria High Court on Thursday against the national director of public prosecutions; the investigating director: Directorate of Special Operations (the Scorpions); and Johan du Plooy, a senior special investigator of the Scorpions. - IOL website

SA mercenaries to appear in court on Monday - 13 January
The trial of eight South African mercenaries who were released from Chikurubi Maximum Prison in Harare last year for their role in the foiled Equatorial Guinea coup plot will kickoff on Monday. All Joy warns of legal action over auditors - 12 January
All Joy Foods may bring legal action against its former auditors, Horwath Leveton Boner, after the firm reported the embattled condiment and preserve manufacturer to the Public Accountants and Auditors Board. This was despite All Joy appointing an unnamed independent forensic auditor to "fully investigate such an accounting error". A solicitor was stabbed to death during a street robbery yards from his home, it has emerged, as police hunted two muggers who continued to attack him after he gave them what they demanded. Tom Ap Rhys Pryce, 31, who worked for Linklaters, a leading corporate law firm, was repeatedly stabbed on his head, torso and hands as he tried to defend himself. -

"As part of the consultative process the SA Law Reform Commission is arranging regional meetings in order to provide an opportunity to interested parties to discuss problem areas in current legislation dealing with privacy concerns, as well as the Commission's preliminary recommendations as set out in the draft Bill.  Consultative meetings will be hosted in Pretoria on 21 February 2006, in Johannesburg on 23 February 2006, in Cape Town on 28 February 2006 and in Durban on 7 March 2006.

South African gay men banned from giving blood - 12 January
South Africa's blood donor service has banned blood from sexually active homosexual men due to a higher risk of HIV, it said on Thursday, provoking an angry response from gay activists. - Reuters website

Gay man with Aids donates blood - 14 January
A gay man with full-blown Aids donated blood on Friday - after lying about his sexual practices, the SA National Blood Transfusion Service (SANBTS) has been told. Reassuring the public that the infected blood would not be used, SANBTS spokesperson Ianthe Exall said every donation was still being tested for HIV/Aids and hepatitis. She said Gay and Lesbian Alliance spokesperson David Baxter had told SANBTS marketing manager Gail Nothard that about 120 of its members had given blood on Friday after lying about their sexual activities. - Mail & Guardian website

192A.   Side and rear retro-reflective material to be fitted to vehicles (Contour markings)
(1)  For the purposes of this regulation "contour marking" means yellow side and rear retro-reflective material that shall comply with SABS ECE R104 "Uniform provisions concerning the approval of retro-reflective markings for heavy and long vehicles and their trailers": Provided that—
(a) application for (paragraph 3 of SABS ECE R104) and approval of paragraph 5 of SABS ECE R104 shall not be required, but the letter "C" indicating contour marking as referred to in paragraph 5.4.3.1 of SABS ECE R104 and the circle surrounding the letter "E" followed by the distinguishing number of the country which has granted approval as referred to in paragraph 5.4.1 of SABS ECE R104, shall be brought onto the retro-reflective marking material;
(b) that advertising consisting of logos, distinctive markings or letters, or characters may be used if it complies with the standard and used in conjunction with contour markings, excluding strips denoting the manufacturer.
(2)  (a)  A goods vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 10 000 kilograms shall be fitted with contour markings on the side and the rear of such vehicle and the rear contour markings may not be fitted more than 600 millimetres from the lower part of the body of such vehicle.
(b)  A goods vehicle with a length of more than 6 metres shall be fitted with contour markings as contemplated in paragraph (a) from 1 July 2004.
(c)  A trailer first registered after 1 July 2004 shall be fitted with side and rear contour markings, as contemplated in paragraph (a).
(d)  Any trailer shall from 1 January 2006 be fitted with side and rear contour markings, as contemplated in paragraph (a).
(e)  A bus first registered from 1 July 2004 shall be fitted with side and rear markings as contemplated in paragraph (a); and
( f )  Any bus shall from 1 July 2006 be fitted with side and rear contour markings as contemplated in paragraph (a).

A Zimbabwean court on Tuesday convicted a high court judge on charges of interfering in the case of a business partner who was subsequently jailed for murder. Judge Benjamin Paradza was arrested in 2003 for allegations that he tried to corruptly influence two colleagues to release the confiscated passport of his business partner who wanted to travel to neighbouring South Africa. - IOL website

EU to probe alleged CIA secret prisons - 12 January
Top EU lawmakers decided on Thursday to set up their own committee to investigate allegations of CIA secret prisons in Eastern Europe, saying they were frustrated by lack of progress in various European probes. The committee will have 46 members, who will be named next week during the European parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, France, according to political leaders in the assembly. - IOL website

EU to address security of gas supply - 9 January
EU energy ministers met on Jan 4 to discuss energy supply security. Although the dispute between Ukraine and Russia appears to be settled for the moment, the knock-on effects in the EU of the crisis have raised the profile of energy supply security issues. A self-confessed cannibal will face a new trial in Germany from Thursday as prosecutors seek a life sentence for the man who killed and ate an apparently willing victim he met on the Internet. Saddam Hussein Trial

Saddam trial judge plans to quit - 14 January
The chief judge in the trial of Saddam Hussein plans to step down, a source close to the judge told Reuters on Friday, in a development that could throw an already turbulent process into further disarray. "He wants to withdraw," the source said of Rizgar Amin, who is to preside over the next hearing on Jan. 24. "He will oversee the next sitting and then announce his reasons for withdrawing." - IOL website

Saddam prefers death by shooting - 3 January
Saddam Hussein has told his lawyers that he wants to be shot by firing squad, not hanged, if sentenced to death during his murder trial, which resumes later this month in Baghdad. Saddam maintains that he is still commander in chief of Iraq's armed forces - and that a firing squad is "the right way" to execute a military leader. - Washington Times website
